Gateway – Motueka

Youth and Adult Community Services

Gateway has community based support services for both adults and youth. Community Support Workers support people living in their own homes in the community. Community Support Services offer both a general level of support (1 – 7 hours depending on their requirements) of 1:1 support. The appropriate level of support for each person referred is determined by the NMDHB Needs Assessors, who meet with each person wishing to be referred to our services. Gateway services cover the wider Tasman area as far as Riwaka and include Tapawera.

All referrals for adult services come through NMDHB (adult) Mental Health teams and referrals for Youth Community Support come through Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).

All Community Support Workers are qualified; those working with youth have particular expertise in this area. The Youth Community Support is available to young people between the ages of 12 and 22 years. The Youth team works closely with schools, training providers, marae and other community agencies. They also work alongside the young person’s families/caregivers to make sure that as far as possible they are kept involved and informed about the young persons progress. Working with Care Managers and GP’s, to ensure that the mental health needs of the young people are monitored and attended to, makes up a large part of the teams work.

The Shed – Day Activity Programme

Gateway Housing Trust - Motueka

The Shed is a day activity centre which is open to anyone experiencing mental illness, providing they have a referral from either their GP or their MCT Case Manager. The Shed opens 3 mornings a week and is staffed by Gateway Housing Trust.

A variety of activities are planned each week, with input from service users. Amongst other things there is a regular art programme, outings, planned walks, barbeques, cooking and shared meals and visits from guest speakers. The Shed has close links with Te Awhina Marae .

The Shed provides a safe, social space for service users to meet old friends and make new ones. Activities are designed to build on strengths, tap hidden gifts, introduce service users to new ideas and experiences, with the aim of developing confidence and self esteem.

Further information about The Shed is available from Gateway Housing Trust Motueka office.
